Woodstock Wine

The Collett family founded Woodstock in 1973 when Douglas Collett AM, a former World War II pilot, purchased the estate and built a winery. The property itself was named by English settlers from the Townsend family in 1905, who established the first vineyards and orchards on the site. Since its first vintage in 1974, the winery has remained under family ownership for three generations. Scott Collett took over winemaking responsibilities in 1982 and was later joined by his son Peter, who now helps lead the winemaking operations. The estate has expanded over time through the acquisition of neighboring old vine blocks, ensuring the family remains caretakers of some of the oldest plant material in the district.

The estate is located in the McLaren Flat sub-district and encompasses several historical vineyard parcels. A key feature of the property is a 31-row block of Shiraz vines planted around 1900, which grows in deep sandy soils on a north-facing slope at the top of the property. The family also maintains bush-vine Grenache planted in 1930 and has added varieties like Montepulciano and Fiano to their holdings. Harvesting typically occurs at night to preserve fruit freshness in the cool temperatures, followed by immediate crushing at the winery. The viticultural approach focuses on soil health and sustainable practices to maintain the longevity of these gnarled, low-yielding vines. Winemaking blends traditional fermentation methods with modern temperature control to ensure the character of the site is reflected in the final wine.

The flagship wine is The Stocks Shiraz, produced from the estate's oldest vineyard block and named after the medieval wooden leg stocks found in the English town of Woodstock. Only the best barrels from this vineyard are selected for the final blend. In addition to its red wines, the producer maintains a significant collection of aged fortified wines, including Muscat and Tawny styles matured in old whiskey barrels located in a dedicated cellar. Other notable releases include Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, and a range of aromatic whites. The producer is recognized as a staple of the McLaren Vale region, balancing historical vineyard management with diverse hospitality offerings such as a restaurant and a dedicated wildlife sanctuary on the grounds.
