Producer
Michal and Martina Mosny moved to the Okanagan Valley from Slovakia in 2011. Before establishing their own label, Michal served as the winemaker and general manager at Lunessence Winery and Vineyard. They launched Winemaker's Cut in 2015, focusing on a philosophy of personal selection similar to a director's cut of a film. The winery is a family owned operation with Michal managing winemaking and Martina overseeing viticulture. In 2021, they moved their tasting and production activities to the District Wine Village in Oliver, transitioning from a virtual model to a permanent physical presence.
The winery relies heavily on the Deadman Lake Vineyard, located south of Oliver on the western side of the valley near Spotted Lake. This site is characterized by complex mineral rich soils including sandy loam, shale, and chernozem, which naturally retains moisture. The Mosnys manage the vineyard using sustainable practices and avoid synthetic pesticides or herbicides. A distinctive part of their philosophy involves playing classical music from thirteen speakers throughout the vineyard and cellar, which they believe contributes to the balance and character of the fruit. Winemaking techniques include cold soaking, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, and aging in a variety of vessels such as French, American, and Slovakian oak.
Winemaker's Cut is particularly recognized for its Syrah, which has received major regional awards including Best of Show at the Top BC Wine Awards for the 2022 vintage. The portfolio also highlights Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Grüner Veltliner, the latter being a rare variety in British Columbia that serves as a tribute to Michal's European winemaking roots. The wines are categorized into tiers such as the CUT estate series, the flagship Bohemian label, and the Curated collection. The producer has earned a reputation for technical precision and for crafting wines that emphasize structural integrity and aromatic clarity.
