Wiese & Krohn

Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn, two Norwegian cousins, established the company in 1865. The firm originally specialized in exporting Port wine to Scandinavia and Germany, growing from a small family business into a commercial operation. After the founders passed away or sold their interests, the management transitioned to dedicated employees, including Edmundo Falcão Carneiro, whose family eventually took full ownership in the 1930s. The house remained independent until 2013, when it was purchased by The Fladgate Partnership. In late 2023, the brand was acquired by WineStone, a holding company within the José de Mello Group, marking a transition to new management.

The primary vineyard for the house is Quinta do Retiro Novo, situated in the Rio Torto valley. This estate covers approximately 17 hectares of vines and holds a Grade A classification, which is the highest ranking awarded by regional authorities based on site potential. The terroir is characterized by steep slopes and schist soils that force vines to grow deep root systems to access water. Vineyard management focuses on low yields to ensure high fruit concentration. Traditional winemaking practices are maintained at the estate, including the use of granite lagares for foot treading during fermentation. The wines are typically matured in seasoned oak pipes, benefiting from the slow oxidation that develops nutty and dried fruit characteristics.

Wiese & Krohn is specifically recognized for its extensive reserves of Colheita Ports, which are tawny wines produced from a single harvest year. The house is distinguished by the depth of its library, which includes barrels dating back to the 19th century, providing a wider range of these vintage dated tawnies than many of its peers. While the producer also releases Vintage Port in high quality years, its market identity is built upon the consistency and longevity of its wood aged wines. Other notable offerings include Reserva White Port and Late Bottled Vintage styles. The producer holds a respected position among collectors for the quality and variety of its aged tawny inventory.
