Weingut Petri is a family-owned estate located in Herxheim am Berg, within the Pfalz region of Germany. The family traces its winemaking history back to 1655, representing fourteen generations of continuous viticulture in the Palatinate. Currently, the winery is managed by brothers Philipp and Maximilian Petri, who took over responsibility for the operations with the ongoing support of their parents. Philipp Petri serves as the primary winemaker, overseeing both the vineyards and the cellar. The brothers have focused on modernizing the estate while maintaining its long-standing traditions, positioning the winery as part of a new generation of quality-focused producers in the northern Pfalz.
The estate manages 22 hectares of vineyards situated at elevations between 130 and 250 meters above sea level. These plots are located along the highest points of the German Wine Route, where the Haardt Mountains provide shelter from harsh weather, creating a mild and sunny microclimate. The terroir is defined by mineral-rich limestone soils and fresh winds that contribute to the precision and health of the fruit. Farming is conducted sustainably under the FAIR’N GREEN certification, which involves avoiding herbicides and insecticides while supplying the soil with natural nutrients. Significant vineyard holdings include plots in the Herxheimer Honigsack, Herxheimer Goldberg, and the prominent Kallstadter Saumagen.
Production focuses primarily on Riesling and Burgundy varieties, including Spätburgunder, Weissburgunder, and Grauburgunder. Winemaking involves hand-harvesting and a commitment to low yields. The fruit undergoes gentle pressing to preserve its natural character, and the resulting wines are aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and wooden vessels. These range from 40 to 50-year-old Palatinate oak barrels to smaller barriques and tonneaux used for the more complex red selections. The estate has earned recognition for the structure and density of its Spätburgunder, particularly those from the Honigsack vineyard. As participants in the "Die Junge Pfalz" initiative, the Petri brothers are recognized for producing balanced and mineral-driven wines that reflect the specific limestone terroir of Herxheim.
