Water Wheel Vineyards

Water Wheel Vineyards was established in 1970 in Bridgewater on Loddon, taking its name from a historical flour mill situated on the riverbank. The winery released its first Shiraz in 1974, helping to establish the modern era of viticulture in the Bendigo region after the industry had been decimated by phylloxera in the previous century. In 1989, the Cumming family purchased the business from its original owners. The Cummings had spent decades farming tomatoes and cherries in the local area before Peter Cumming, a Roseworthy winemaking graduate, decided to focus on wine production. Under his direction, the family expanded their initial 20-acre purchase into a substantial estate.

The estate vineyards now cover approximately 136 hectares near the banks of the Loddon River, where the climate is typically warm and dry. These sites feature a variety of soil types, ranging from light, well-drained loams for white grapes to heavier soils with clay subsoils for red varieties. A significant portion of the vineyard is located at the Memsie property, where Peter Cumming discovered a limestone-rich site originally intended for tomato cultivation. This discovery led to the planting of several blocks of Shiraz. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes fruit intensity and varietal clarity, often achieved through traditional maturation in the winery facility built on-site in 1980.

Water Wheel Vineyards is best known for its Shiraz, particularly the Memsie Homestead range, which has a reputation for being among the most reliable value-driven wines in Victoria. Industry critics frequently highlight the estate for producing dense, full-bodied reds that compete with more expensive labels from larger regions. The producer also grows and vinifies a range of other varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. As a family-owned and operated business, the Cummings manage all aspects of production from their Bridgewater base, maintaining a focus on regional expression and accessible pricing.
