Producer
Walter Hansel, a local car dealership owner and farmer, established the foundation of the estate by planting 257 vines on his property in 1978. Initially a weekend hobby, the vineyard produced small amounts of wine for family consumption. His son, Stephen Hansel, eventually took over the operation and founded the commercial winery in 1996, releasing the first official vintage two years later. During the formative years, Stephen was mentored by Tom Rochioli, a prominent neighbor who provided technical guidance and budwood for new plantings. The producer remains a family-run operation, with Stephen Hansel currently serving as both the proprietor and the primary winemaker.
The estate encompasses 80 contiguous acres in the southern portion of the Russian River Valley, situated near the Sebastopol Hills. This location is characterized by a maritime climate where cooling fog regulates temperatures, allowing the fruit to achieve ripeness without losing natural acidity. The vineyards are planted with 11 different clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, distributed across three distinct soil types that the winery identifies as providing unique flavor profiles. Stephen Hansel manages the land with a focus on low yields, frequently conducting multiple passes through each vineyard block to ensure fruit quality. The winemaking process involves manual sorting, natural yeast fermentation, and gravity-fed movements for the Pinot Noir to minimize agitation.
Walter Hansel Winery is recognized for its extensive range of clonal-specific and single-vineyard bottlings, including the North Slope, South Slope, and Cahill Lane labels. These wines are often described as having a Burgundian influence while maintaining the depth and concentration typical of Sonoma County fruit. The estate has built a reputation for consistency and for offering high quality at a price point that is often more accessible than its immediate neighbors. Beyond the central focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the winery also produces limited quantities of Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé. The family also operates a French-themed bistro nearby, further connecting their wine production with the local culinary culture.
