Vinyes del Terrer is a family-owned estate located in the municipality of Vila-seca, just south of the city of Tarragona. The Morell family has owned and farmed this land for more than a century, though the property was historically dedicated to a variety of Mediterranean crops including olives, carob trees, and hazelnuts. In 1989, the family began a concentrated effort to return the estate to viticulture by replanting vines across their holdings. Eduard Morell and his father established the modern winemaking project to transition from selling grapes to producing their own bottled wines, eventually releasing the first commercial vintage in 2003. The current generation continues to focus on the preservation of the local landscape while modernizing the cellar operations.
The estate comprises seven hectares of vineyards divided into nine small parcels situated two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. At an elevation of only 20 meters, the vines benefit from a temperate climate and constant sea breezes that mitigate summer heat. The defining characteristic of the property is the lumaquela soil, a specific calcareous-clay sediment formed from millions of years of marine fossil and seashell accumulation. The winery follows organic farming practices and holds CCPAE certification. Winemaking is conducted with manual techniques, including hand-harvesting and careful fruit selection, to ensure the resulting wines retain the salinity and mineral tension provided by the fossil-rich earth.
The producer is best known for red wines such as Terrer d'Aubert, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha, and Nus del Terrer. These reds typically undergo aging in French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months to integrate their structure and tannins. Their white wine portfolio includes Blanc del Terrer, which utilizes varieties such as Macabeo or Sauvignon Blanc and undergoes lees aging to enhance its texture. Vinyes del Terrer has earned a reputation for creating wines that balance Mediterranean fruit ripeness with a distinctive coastal freshness. The winery is considered a specialist producer within the Tarragona appellation, focusing on small-batch production that highlights its specific marine terroir.
