Vidigal Wines

Vidigal Wines was established at the beginning of the 20th century in a winery originally founded by a Catholic Church canon near the city of Leiria. The company passed through several ownership groups over the subsequent decades until it was acquired in the 1990s by the current managing director, António Mendes Lopes. Lopes brought extensive experience from the Scandinavian wine trade and oversaw a period of significant technological modernization and management shifts. Today, the winery operates as a family-run enterprise with Lopes holding a 60 percent share, while a Norwegian investment company owns the remaining 40 percent of the business.

The producer is headquartered in the Lisboa region, where the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provides cooling sea breezes that influence the character of the wines. Vidigal manages approximately 450 hectares of vineyards through diverse partnerships, with production extending to other well-known Portuguese regions including Vinho Verde, Dão, Douro, and Alentejo. The winemaking team is led by António Ventura and Rafael Neuparth, who focus on a modern style that emphasizes fresh fruit and approachability. Primary grape varieties include Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, and Castelão for reds, while Arinto and Loureiro are used for white wines. Soils in the Lisboa area are predominantly composed of clay and limestone, which helps maintain natural acidity in the grapes.

Vidigal is one of the leading wine exporters in Portugal, with approximately 90 percent of its annual production of over three million bottles sold in international markets. The estate achieved significant commercial success with the Porta 6 brand, which features a label depicting a Lisbon tram scene by artist Hauke Vagt. This particular wine gained a broad following in the United Kingdom and Norway after receiving televised recommendations from high-profile chefs. Beyond its widely distributed labels, the winery produces premium offerings such as Brutalis, and the head of its winemaking team, António Ventura, was recognized as Portugal’s Oenologist of the Year in 2006.
