Azienda Agricola La Torre was established in 1976 when Giuseppe Ananìa purchased the estate in the southern part of Montalcino. The Ananìa family moved to the region from Calabria, where they had previously managed a farm producing buffalo mozzarella and other agricultural goods. Luigi Ananìa, Giuseppe’s son, assumed leadership of the property after completing his studies in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florence in 1986. Under his direction, the winery released its first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino in 1982, marking the beginning of the family’s focus on high altitude viticulture in the Sant’Angelo in Colle subzone. Today, Luigi continues to manage the estate alongside his daughter Benedetta.
The estate encompasses 36 hectares, though only 5.8 hectares are dedicated to grapevines. These vineyards are situated at approximately 440 meters above sea level, placing them among the higher elevations in the Montalcino appellation. The terroir is characterized by south and southwest exposures and soils composed of limestone and galestro, a rocky, schistous clay typical of premium Tuscan sites. The viticulture follows organic principles, and the estate received official certification starting with the 2016 vintage. Winemaking remains traditional, employing native yeasts and fermentation in stainless steel or large oak formats. Aging takes place in 25 to 40 hectoliter barrels. The cellar practices prioritize minimal intervention, with the team utilizing gravity fed bottling systems to avoid mechanical stress on the wine.
While the estate produces classic Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, the Ampelio Toscana IGT represents a distinct historical exploration. This wine is a blend of Alicante, Sangiovese Grosso, and Ciliegiolo. It serves as an homage to the historical field blends found in the region centuries ago. The Alicante component, also known locally as Grenache, provides a spicy contrast to the structure of the Sangiovese. Aged for 12 months in used oak casks and bottled without filtration, Ampelio is noted for its fragrant Mediterranean aromatics and rustic Tuscan profile. The winery maintains an understated presence in the international market, focusing on small production levels that rarely exceed 25,000 bottles annually across all their labels.
