The Jost family has cultivated vineyards in the town of Bacharach since 1831. Peter Jost managed the winery for more than forty years and helped secure its membership in the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter during the mid 1980s. Cecilia Jost took over the management from her father in 2012, representing the seventh generation of the family. The estate is often called Hahnenhof, a name derived from its primary vineyard holding.
The estate manages fifteen hectares of vines divided between the Mittelrhein and the Rheingau regions. Its most significant site is the Bacharacher Hahn, a south facing monopole vineyard featuring steep gradients and blue Devonian slate. Holdings in the Rheingau, including the Wallufer Walkenberg and Martinsthaler Rödchen, came into the family in 1953 through inheritance. Winemaking practices focus on the specific microclimates of these two regions, emphasizing the mineral characteristics of the slate in the Mittelrhein and the fuller texture provided by the loess loam and quartzite in the Rheingau.
Toni Jost is primarily known for its Riesling production, specifically the VDP Grosse Lage bottlings from the Hahn vineyard. These wines are produced in a range of styles that include dry Grosses Gewächs and various Prädikat levels such as Kabinett and Spätlese. The winery also produces Spätburgunder and Weissburgunder. As a member of both the VDP Mittelrhein and VDP Rheingau, the estate has a dual regional presence that is reflected in a portfolio showing the contrast between the two banks of the Rhine.
