Tenuta Sette Cieli

Erika Ratti, daughter of the silk entrepreneur Antonio Ratti, purchased the property in 1994. Originally from the Lake Como area, she initially intended to use the 120 hectares of land for breeding horses. After identifying the viticultural potential of the rocky terrain, the family established the wine project in 1998. The first vineyards were planted in 2001 on high altitude terraces overlooking the coast. Today, the second generation of the family, represented by Erika's son Ambrogio Cremona Ratti, oversees the operations. He transitioned from a career in renewable energy and real estate to take management of the estate in 2012.

The estate comprises 120 hectares, with approximately 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards. These are situated in Monteverdi Marittimo, overlooking the Bolgheri plain from an altitude of 400 meters. The vineyards are organized into high density terraces supported by dry stone walls and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. These high elevation plots feature soils composed of rock and clay with portions of sand. The local microclimate is influenced by constant sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, which contribute to significant diurnal temperature shifts and slow grape maturation. Winemaker and CEO Elena Pozzolini oversees organic farming practices and a low intervention approach in the cellar. Fermentations occur with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks, and each variety and parcel is handled separately before aging in French oak barrels.

Tenuta Sette Cieli is recognized for producing Bordeaux style blends that emphasize aromatic complexity and freshness. The signature wine, Scipio, is a monovarietal Cabernet Franc aged for 24 months in French oak and 24 months in bottle before release. Indaco is a blend of Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon that takes its name from the indigo light seen over the sea at sunset. The portfolio also includes Noi 4, a Bolgheri DOC wine named for the four family members, and Yantra, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend focused on primary fruit. Because the original vineyards sit above the elevation limits for the Bolgheri DOC, the flagship wines are typically classified as IGT Toscana.
