The Gondi family acquired the Bossi estate in 1592, though their history in Florence as bankers and merchants is documented as far back as the 13th century. The family lineage includes high ranking ambassadors to the Medici court and prominent officials in the French government who served alongside Catherine de Medici. Significant modernization of the estate occurred in the late 19th century under the direction of Maria de la Bruierre, who expanded the park and the winemaking cellars. Today, the property is managed by Marchese Bernardo Gondi and his sister Donatella, representing the 25th generation. They are supported by Bernardo's sons, Gerardo and Lapo, the latter of whom serves as the president of the Chianti Rufina consortium.
Located in the hills of Pontassieve, the estate covers 315 total hectares, including 19 hectares of vineyards positioned at elevations ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The terroir is characterized by galestro, a friable schistous clay typical of high quality Tuscan sites, and limestone soils that favor structural development in the grapes. Most vineyards face south or southwest to maximize sun exposure throughout the growing season. In the cellar, the family works with oenologist Fabrizio Moltard to produce wines that emphasize territorial character. Fermentation occurs in temperature controlled tanks, while maturation takes place in the historic vaulted cellars using a combination of large Slavonian oak barrels and smaller French barriques.
The flagship wine of the estate is Villa Bossi, a Chianti Rufina Riserva composed of Sangiovese along with Colorino and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is recognized for its longevity and is frequently the subject of vertical tastings dating back several decades. The producer also focuses on Super Tuscan bottlings such as Mazzaferrata, which is made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ser Amerigo, a blend dedicated to an ancestor who was a contemporary of Dante. The portfolio includes a traditional Vin Santo del Chianti Rufina, crafted primarily from Trebbiano Toscano since the 1950s. The estate is also a founding member of the Laudemio consortium for high quality extra virgin olive oil.
