Segura Viudas

The history of the Segura Viudas estate, known as the Heredad, dates back to the 11th century when it served as a defensive tower during the Reconquista. The property underwent various transformations over hundreds of years, operating as a flour mill and distillery before the Segura brothers purchased the Can Esbert de Raïm estate in the 1950s. They established the modern winery in 1954 and officially launched the Segura Viudas brand in 1969. Today, the producer is part of the Henkell Freixenet group, maintaining its status as a prominent name in the Penedès region while preserving the Romanesque and Gothic architectural heritage of its historic manor house.

Located in Torrelavit near Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate influenced by coastal hills and plains. The winemaking philosophy center on the concept of respecting the roots, which involves a strong commitment to biodiversity and environmental health. Segura Viudas was among the first in Spain to receive the Wineries for Climate Protection certificate and has achieved organic certification for its agricultural practices. Production follows the traditional method, using indigenous white varieties like Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada, alongside a successful effort to revive the nearly extinct red Trepat grape for its rosé wines.

Segura Viudas is best recognized for its Reserva Heredad, a premium Cava originally created for the family and distinguished by its iconic bottle featuring a pewter base and shield. The portfolio also includes the widely distributed Brut Reserva and Brut Rosé, which are noted for their extended aging on the lees and fine effervecence. The winery maintains a reputation for balancing large scale production with an artisanal approach, focusing on long bottle fermentation and sustainable viticulture. Their wines are frequently cited as benchmarks for quality and value within the Cava D.O. and are exported globally.
