Salvestrin Estate Vineyard and Winery

Italian immigrants John and Emma Salvestrin established the estate in 1932 when they purchased a portion of the original Dr. George Belden Crane ranch in St. Helena. The acquisition included 23 acres of vineyard land and the historic Crane Victorian home, which the family restored and still occupies. For several decades, the second generation, represented by Ed Salvestrin, focused on farming and sold the vineyard fruit to local cooperatives and other wineries. In 1994, Rich Salvestrin, representing the third generation, launched the family's private label to vinify the estate production. The operation remains family owned, with the fourth generation now active in the business.

The winery manages approximately 19 acres of the Dr. Crane Vineyard, a site characterized by well drained Bale clay and loam soils. These rocky grounds are among the oldest continuously farmed vineyard plots in Napa Valley, having been first planted in the mid nineteenth century. The Salvestrin family practices organic farming and earned California Certified Organic Farmers certification in 2021, building on long standing sustainability efforts through the Napa Green program. Winemaking, led by Rich Salvestrin, prioritizes balance and fresh acidity. The production team often harvests earlier than neighboring producers to maintain a vibrant red fruit profile and structural longevity. The vineyard sits in the shadows of Spring Mountain, benefiting from a climate that allows for slow and even ripening of the grapes.

The flagship wine is the Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which is recognized for its mineral qualities and focused fruit. Another prominent offering is the Three D Cabernet Sauvignon, a select barrel blend named for the owners' three daughters that has received high critical scores from publications such as the Wine Advocate. The estate also produces Retaggio, a Tuscan inspired blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, as well as varietal Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc. While many neighboring parcels of the Dr. Crane Vineyard are owned by larger viticultural firms, Salvestrin remains one of the few small, family held estates in the heart of St. Helena. This independence allows them to maintain a reputation for producing balanced, estate bottled wines that reflect the historical character of their site.
