Sons of Eden

Sons of Eden was established in 2000 by winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham. Both founders were raised in the Barossa and Eden Valley regions, which provided the inspiration for the name of the venture. Ryan previously served as a winemaker at Henschke and as a group winemaker for McWilliam’s, while Cowham worked as a senior viticulturist for Yalumba managing sites such as Pewsey Vale and Heggies Vineyard. This partnership was specifically designed to combine technical winemaking expertise with a specialized focus on vineyard management and fruit quality. The estate remains independently owned and operated by the two founders, who continue to oversee all production phases from the soil to the final bottling.

The producer manages a network of approximately 30 unique vineyard sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. In the Eden Valley, these vineyards are located at higher altitudes, ranging up to 600 meters, with rocky and granitic soils that favor the production of Riesling and cooler climate Shiraz. The Barossa Valley sites provide access to older Grenache and Shiraz plantings grown in ancient, ironstone-rich soils. Winemaking practices emphasize minimal intervention, incorporating small-batch fermentation, the use of indigenous yeasts, and the practice of co-fermenting red and white varieties. They utilize various oak treatments, ranging from seasoned hogsheads to new French oak, to complement the specific fruit profile of each parcel. This approach aims to produce wines that reflect the specific environmental characteristics of the individual vineyard sites.

Signature wines include the Zephyrus Shiraz, which blends fruit from both the Barossa and Eden Valleys to create a balanced regional profile. The Romulus and Remus labels provide a direct stylistic comparison between old vine Shiraz grown in the Barossa and Eden Valleys respectively. The Freya Riesling serves as the primary white wine, sourced from high altitude Eden Valley vineyards, while the Kennedy is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre named after a specific grower. Sons of Eden has received consistent recognition from Australian critics, including a long-running five red star rating from the James Halliday Wine Companion and multiple awards at the Barossa Wine Show. The producer is recognized for its ability to balance traditional Barossa intensity with the natural acidity and aromatic lift associated with the cooler Eden Valley sub-region.
