Rolf Binder

Rolf Binder was established in 1955 by Rolf Heinrich Binder and his wife Franziska Binder. The founders were post war immigrants from Austria and Hungary who initially worked on the South Australian railways before purchasing a winery in the Barossa Valley. They originally named the business Veritas, a name that remained until 2005 when it was rebranded to Rolf Binder to honor the founder following his death in 2003. The winery was managed for many years by the second generation, siblings Rolf Binder Junior and Christa Deans. In March 2021, the estate was acquired by Accolade Wines, ending its history as a family owned entity.

The estate encompasses approximately 100 hectares of vineyards primarily located in the western sub regions of the Barossa Valley, including Marananga, Seppeltsfield, and Gomersal. These sites are characterized by ancient soils composed of red brown earths and deep clay, which contribute to the concentration of the grapes. Winemaking practices remain centered on traditional Barossa techniques, such as the use of open top concrete fermenters and maturation in a combination of French and American oak. While Christa Deans was long responsible for the production of white wines and Riesling from the nearby Eden Valley, Rolf Binder Junior oversaw the red wine program. Today, the winemaking team is led by Paulo Correia.

The producer is best known for its powerful, estate grown Shiraz and Shiraz Mataro blends. Its flagship wine, the Hanisch Shiraz, is sourced from a specific block of vines planted in 1972 on the estate's Hanisch vineyard and is included in the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine. Another significant label is the Bulls Blood, a blend of Shiraz and Mataro that references the family's European heritage. The winery also produces the Heysen Shiraz and the Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache blend. These wines have earned a reputation for being full bodied and intense while maintaining a balance that avoids excessive oak influence, reflecting the specific terroir of the western Barossa floor.
