Paul Jaboulet Aîné

Antoine Jaboulet established the firm in 1834 in Tain l'Hermitage. His sons Paul and Henri expanded the holdings, with Paul, the eldest son, giving the estate its current name as Paul Jaboulet Aîné. The Jaboulet family managed the property for six generations, maintaining a dominant position in the region through the mid 20th century under the leadership of Louis Jaboulet. After a period of inconsistent quality following the death of Gérard Jaboulet in 1997, the Swiss Frey family acquired the house in 2006. Caroline Frey took control as owner and winemaker, bringing expertise from the family's other properties, including Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and Château Corton C in Burgundy.

The estate manages approximately 125 hectares of vineyards throughout the Rhône Valley, including 25 hectares on the Hermitage hill. These holdings span parcels such as Le Méal, Les Bessards, and Les Rocoules, where vines grow in granite and stony soils. Under Caroline Frey, the estate transitioned to organic viticulture, receiving certification in 2016, and began practicing biodynamic farming shortly after. Winemaking occurs in a modern gravity fed cellar designed to reduce mechanical intervention. To adapt to climate change and drought, the vineyard teams have adopted a no hedging approach that allows vines to grow long, creating a natural foliage canopy to protect grapes from direct sun and preserve freshness.

The flagship wine is Hermitage La Chapelle, a 100 percent Syrah blend sourced from various terroirs on the hill. It is named for the 13th century chapel of Saint Christophe, which the family purchased in 1919. The 1961 vintage of La Chapelle remains one of the highest scoring wines in history, helping establish the brand's reputation for long lived reds. Additional wines include the white Hermitage Chevalier de Sterimberg, composed of Marsanne and Roussanne, and the Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert. The portfolio also includes the Les Traverses bottling from Ventoux, produced from Grenache and Syrah vines grown on south facing slopes, and the Parallèle 45 line, which was created in 1950.
