Poderi e Cantine Oddero

The Oddero family has lived in the La Morra area since the 18th century, though the modern commercial history of the winery began with the first estate bottling in 1878. Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926, was a central figure in the estate growth and played a significant role in establishing the regulations for the Barolo and Barbaresco appellations. Following a family division in 2006, the historical cellars and brand remained with Giacomo and his daughters, Mariacristina and Mariavittoria. Today, the estate is managed by Mariacristina, who is a trained enologist, along with the seventh generation of the family, Isabella and Pietro.

The winery manages 35 hectares of vineyards, with primary holdings in several major crus across the Barolo production zone. These include parcels in Brunate, Rocche di Castiglione, Villero, and Bussia, along with the Vigna Rionda site in Serralunga d'Alba. Viticulture shifted toward organic practices in the late 2000s, and the estate received organic certification for its Nebbiolo vineyards in 2017. Winemaking follows a traditional approach, using stainless steel tanks for fermentation and long maceration periods. The wines are aged in large Slavonian and Austrian oak casks, ranging from 40 to 75 hectoliters, to avoid the influence of new oak flavors and preserve the character of the specific vineyard sites.

Oddero is recognized for its collection of single vineyard Barolo wines, particularly the Vigna Rionda Riserva, which undergoes extended aging before release. The portfolio also includes Barbaresco from the Gallina cru in Neive, alongside Barbera d'Alba, Nizza, Moscato d'Asti, and Riesling. The estate maintains a reputation as a traditionalist producer, focusing on structural clarity and the expression of vineyard characteristics rather than modern extraction techniques. Recent vintages have received significant critical attention, including a 100 point score for the 2016 Vigna Rionda Riserva, which helped solidify its position as a reference point for the Piedmont region.
