Producer
Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines was established in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, who initially founded the project as Mullineux Family Wines. The couple met in 2004 while working vintages in the South of France and chose to settle in the Swartland because of the potential they saw in its ancient soils. In 2013, the business transitioned into its current structure through a partnership with Indian entrepreneur Analjit Singh, the founder of the Leeu Collection. Today, the family owned venture operates from two primary locations, which include the original Swartland estate and a second winery called Leeu Passant based in Franschhoek. Ownership is shared between the Mullineux family, Analjit Singh, and Peter Dart.
The Swartland vineyards are centered around Roundstone Farm, located on the southwestern slopes of the Kasteelberg mountain. Viticulture focuses on three specific soil types, which are granite, schist, and iron. The estate manages these sites using sustainable and regenerative organic practices, avoiding the use of weed killers, insecticides, or systemic fungicides. In the cellar, Andrea Mullineux follows a minimalist approach that emphasizes site expression over winemaking intervention. All wines undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts and are aged primarily in neutral French oak barrels. The production process excludes the use of commercial yeasts, acids, tannins, or enzymes, and the wines are typically bottled without fining or filtration.
The producer is best known for its Single Terroir series, which features individual bottlings of Syrah and Chenin Blanc from specific soil profiles. Their signature range also includes the Old Vines White, a blend led by Chenin Blanc from low yielding bush vines, and the Olerasay straw wine, which is produced using a solera system. The winery has earned significant recognition in the South African wine industry, including five Winery of the Year awards from the Platter Guide between 2014 and 2023. At an international level, the estate was named the World Best Rising Star at the 2025 Golden Vines Awards, and Andrea Mullineux was named International Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2016.
