Producer
Maison Burtin, the producer of the De Monterat label, was founded in 1933 by Gaston Burtin in the town of Épernay. Gaston Burtin was a prominent figure in the Champagne trade, initially establishing the business at the Château des Archers and focusing on the production of cuvées for a diverse range of private labels and international markets. Over several decades, the house grew into one of the largest operations in the region. It eventually became part of the Lanson-BCC group, which was formed through the merger of Boizel Chanoine Champagne and the Lanson house. This parent company, currently the second largest Champagne group in France, continues to manage the De Monterat brand from its headquarters on the Rue Maurice Cerveaux.
The house sources its grapes from a broad selection of vineyards across the Champagne appellation through long-standing contracts with independent growers. Winemaking takes place at the company's extensive facility in Épernay, which is equipped with modern temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the fruit. The signature Brut expression typically utilizes a blend dominated by black grapes, specifically 53 percent Pinot Noir and 42 percent Pinot Meunier, with a 5 percent addition of Chardonnay. Following the second fermentation in the bottle, the wines are aged for a minimum of 15 months on their lees in the estate's deep chalk cellars. This period of cool maturation allows the wine to develop a fine mousse and integrated acidity while maintaining a dosage of approximately 10 grams per liter.
De Monterat is best known for its non-vintage Brut, which offers a profile defined by notes of green apple, lemon zest, and fresh brioche. The label also produces an Extra Dry version that features a slightly higher sugar content for a softer texture on the palate. Within the global wine market, the brand is recognized for its consistency and its position as an accessible introduction to the traditional Champagne style. While the house does not focus on single-vineyard or vintage-specific prestige cuvées for this label as often as some of its sister brands, it is noted for its reliable quality and balanced structure. The wines are frequently found in European and international markets where they represent the large-scale production expertise of the Burtin house.
