The Lusvardi family has a long history of viticulture in San Martino in Rio, a municipality located in the province of Reggio Emilia. While the family had grown grapes for decades to supply local cooperatives, the modern winery was established in 2003 by Andrea Lusvardi and his wife Rita Covezzi. This shift marked the beginning of estate bottling under the Lusvardi name. The operation remains a family-run estate, with the founders overseeing the transition from traditional agriculture to a specialized focus on high-quality sparkling wine production.
The estate vineyards, including the primary Podere il Serraglio plot, are situated on alluvial soils composed of clay and sand. These soil conditions are utilized to produce wines with high natural acidity and distinct floral profiles. Lusvardi began a formal conversion to organic viticulture in 2010 and received official certification in 2014. The technical direction is provided by consulting enologist Federico Giotto, who employs a philosophy of minimal intervention. Winemaking is conducted in a modern, eco-friendly cellar that features a photovoltaic power system and a green roof designed for natural thermal insulation.
Lusvardi is best known for its dry, artisanal expressions of Lambrusco that diverge from the historically sweeter, commercial styles of the region. Their portfolio focuses on the Lambrusco Salamino, Grasparossa, and Sorbara varieties, often produced as Brut or dosage-zero sparkling wines. Notable labels include the Lusvardi Brut and the Robin, a rosé made using the ancestral method where fermentation is completed in the bottle without disgorgement. The producer has gained a reputation for precision and sustainability, positioning its wines within the modern movement of craft sparkling production in Emilia-Romagna.
