Leeuwin Estate

Denis and Tricia Horgan established Leeuwin Estate in 1973, making it one of the founding wineries of the Margaret River region. The property was originally a cattle farm purchased by Denis Horgan in 1969 as part of a larger business transaction involving a plumbing firm. Robert Mondavi of Napa Valley provided early mentorship, visiting the site in 1972 and encouraging the Horgans to plant vines due to the region's potential for premium production. Today, the estate remains independently owned and operated by the Horgan family, with second and third generations now involved in leadership and daily operations.

The vineyards are located in a coastal zone influenced by the Indian and Southern Oceans, providing a maritime climate with cool evenings that support slow ripening. The soils consist primarily of gravelly loams over an ancient granitic base. Winemaking focuses on specific clonal selections, such as the Gin Gin clone for Chardonnay, which produces small bunches and natural fruit weight. For Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate utilizes the Houghton clone planted in free-draining, low-nutrient soils to control vine vigour and enhance tannin maturity. Sustainable viticulture and a philosophy of site expression in the cellar are central to their production methods.

Leeuwin Estate is most recognized for its Art Series range, which features labels commissioned from contemporary Australian artists. The Art Series Chardonnay is considered a benchmark for Australian white wine and has consistently received high ratings from international critics since the early 1980s. Both the Art Series Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are listed in the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine, with the Chardonnay holding the highest tier of recognition. Beyond its wine production, the estate maintains an art gallery on the property to showcase its collection of original label paintings and hosts a long-running annual concert series.
