Kistler Vineyards

Kistler Vineyards was established in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Steve Kistler, a Stanford graduate who gained experience at Ridge Vineyards under Paul Draper, served as the primary winemaker and vineyard manager for nearly four decades. Mark Bixler handled business operations and laboratory work until his passing in 2017. In 2008, Kistler sold a majority interest in the winery to Bill Price, who owns Price Family Vineyards and Estates. Following a ten-year transition period, Steve Kistler retired from the estate at the end of 2017 to focus on his own Pinot Noir project. Jason Kesner, who joined the team in 2008 after managing Hudson Vineyards, currently serves as the president and winemaker.

The producer manages fifteen vineyard sites across Sonoma County and the Napa side of the Carneros appellation, including holdings in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Their viticultural philosophy emphasizes low yields and small berries to maintain natural acidity and concentration. A defining characteristic of the estate is its focus on a single heritage California Chardonnay clone, often referred to as the Old Wente selection, which is planted across diverse soil types to highlight site-specific differences. Winemaking follows traditional Burgundian techniques, including fermentation with native yeasts in subterranean barrel rooms. The Chardonnays undergo full malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels and are typically bottled without fining or filtration after resting on the lees for approximately twelve months.

Kistler is best known for its extensive portfolio of vineyard-designate Chardonnays, including bottlings from Durell, McCrea, Hyde, and Hudson. They also produce several Pinot Noirs, such as the Bodega Headlands and Occidental Station bottlings, using heritage clones sourced from Burgundy. The wines are primarily distributed through a private mailing list that often requires a significant waiting period for new members. The estate has maintained a reputation for consistency and technical precision since its first vintage in 1979. Analysts and collectors frequently compare the house style to the white wines of the Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet regions due to its focus on structural density and mineral character.
