Producer
Janela Branca is a wine brand produced by the historic Quinta de São Sebastião estate, which is located in Arruda dos Vinhos and dates back to its official founding in 1755. The name translates to white window and was originally conceived during the global pandemic as a symbol of optimism and a tribute to the architectural culture of Lisbon. Although the parent estate and its primary vineyards are situated in the Lisboa region, the Janela Branca line was expanded into the Vinho Verde DOC through a joint venture with local growers in the Minho province. This collaboration enables the producer to apply its technical expertise to the specific cool climate viticulture of northern Portugal.
The vineyards utilized for the Vinho Verde production are located approximately 40 kilometers from the Atlantic coast, where they benefit from high altitudes and a climate defined by strong maritime breezes. These sites feature fertile granitic soils that help maintain the characteristic acidity and mineral structure of the grapes. Winemaking is directed by Filipe Sevinate Pinto, who employs classic fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve primary fruit aromas. The process involves smooth skin maceration and careful management of fermentation to produce a light bodied style with a crisp, refreshing profile.
The brand is most recognized for its bright white and rosé wines that emphasize ease of drinking and accessible price points. Its signature Vinho Verde is a blend of the indigenous grapes Loureiro, Trajadura, and Arinto, yielding a wine with low alcohol content and a flavor profile of green apple, lemon, and white flowers. These wines are known for their consistent quality, often featuring a smooth and slightly sweet finish that appeals to a wide audience. The label has received various accolades, including silver medals at the London Wine Competition and multiple best buy recommendations from international wine critics.
