Heartland Wines

Heartland Wines was established in 1999 by a group of industry professionals led by winemaker Ben Glaetzer. The project began when Glaetzer identified the potential for high quality fruit in the Langhorne Creek region, which was then a less recognized part of South Australia. The current ownership is centered on Glaetzer and Managing Director Nick Keukenmeester, who work with a team of veteran growers. While the brand initially sourced fruit from several areas including the Limestone Coast, it has transitioned to focus exclusively on the Langhorne Creek sub-region.

The vineyards are characterized by ancient alluvial soils and a significant maritime influence. A defining climatic feature is the Lake Doctor, a cooling breeze that blows from Lake Alexandrina every afternoon to moderate summer temperatures. This phenomenon extends the growing season and helps maintain acidity in the grapes. Although the fruit is grown in Langhorne Creek, the wines are produced at the Barossa Vintners facility in Tanunda. This arrangement allows the winemaking team to use gravity-fed systems and small-batch fermentation techniques while maintaining technical precision.

The producer is best known for its robust red wines, particularly the Director's Cut Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The flagship bottling is Heartland One, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that represents the finest parcels from each vintage. Beyond traditional Australian varieties, the winery has gained recognition for working with Italian grapes like Dolcetto and Lagrein. The estate maintains a reputation for providing high quality at accessible price points, and its wines are frequently cited for their balance and regional expression.
