Haden Fig

Erin Nuccio founded Haden Fig in 2007 while working as an apprentice at Evesham Wood in Salem, Oregon. Before entering wine production, Nuccio spent several years in wine retail in Washington D.C. and distribution in Massachusetts. His interest in the restrained style of Oregon Pinot Noir eventually led him to move West. After attending viticulture and enology school in Northern California to study the science of winemaking, he settled in the Willamette Valley to work under the mentorship of Russ Raney. Nuccio established Haden Fig as his own label to explore diverse vineyard sites while training to maintain the legacy of Evesham Wood, which he and his wife Jordan officially purchased in 2010.

The winery follows a philosophy centered on sourcing fruit from non-irrigated and dry-farmed vineyards. Nuccio is a member of the Deep Roots Coalition, an organization that advocates for the environmental and quality benefits of dry farming. Key vineyard partners include the organic Cancilla Vineyard in the Tualatin Hills and the Croft Vineyard, which is known for its marine sedimentary soils. Winemaking at the subterranean facility is non-interventionist, utilizing native yeasts and a hands-off approach in the cellar. This method aims to preserve the character provided by the cooling Pacific winds that draft through the Van Duzer Corridor, helping grapes retain acidity while developing complex flavors.

Haden Fig is primarily recognized for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though the producer also releases Pinot Gris and Rosé. Specific bottlings like the Juliette Chardonnay from Mahonia Vineyard and site-specific Pinot Noirs from Temperance Hill or the Sojeau Vineyard often receive praise for their balance and value. These wines are typically defined by moderate alcohol levels and bright acidity, reflecting the cooler climate of the Eola-Amity Hills and other northern valley sites. The label has built a reputation for site-driven wines that emphasize fruit purity and structural integrity. Critics often note the transparency and age-worthiness of the wines, which continue the traditional winemaking practices established at the Evesham Wood estate.
