Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a family estate located in the village of Brauneberg. The winery has been managed by five generations of the Steinmetz family, beginning in the early 1900s. August Steinmetz oversaw the estate until 1938, when it was taken over by his son Wilhelm. Wilhelm's son, Günther, began leading the winery in 1957 and developed the quality-focused style that the family continues to follow today. Stefan Steinmetz represents the fifth generation and took over the cellar and cultivation duties at the age of 17 in 1999. Since 2014, he has managed the business alongside his wife, Sammie.
The estate manages approximately 13 hectares of vineyards located on steep slopes throughout the Middle Mosel. These holdings include plots in sites such as Brauneberger Juffer and Piesporter Goldtröpfchen along with the Dhroner Hofberg. Stefan Steinmetz is noted for recultivating historically significant but forgotten sites, including the Wintricher Geierslay and portions of the Wintricher Ohligsberg. The vineyards are farmed using natural viticulture practices that exclude synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. In the cellar, which features a vaulted space dating to 1563, the winemaking philosophy prioritizes minimal intervention. All wines are fermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts in large oak fuder or stainless steel tanks. Stefan renounces the use of additives or fining agents during the process.
Riesling is the primary focus of the estate, produced in styles ranging from bone dry to traditional sweet Prädikat levels. The winery is also recognized for its Pinot Noir, which is often aged in used French barriques sourced from Burgundian producers. These wines are valued for their expression of the various slate and quartzite soils found in the different vineyard parcels. The portfolio also includes Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, as well as a red field blend of nearly extinct varieties known as Alter Satz. Today, the estate is considered a benchmark for independent winemaking in the Mosel and receives consistent praise from international critics for its technical skill.
