Tulbagh Winery

Tulbagh Winery was established in 1906 as a cooperative in the Tulbagh Valley. In 2006, the producer merged with Porterville Cellar to expand its production capacity and distribution reach, becoming one of the largest cellar operations in the country. The organization transitioned from its cooperative roots to a private company in 2012, operating under the name Tulbagh Winery International Limited. It is currently owned by approximately 30 shareholders who provide grapes from their respective farms.

The vineyards are located in a horseshoe shaped valley surrounded by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg, and Obiekwaberg mountains. This geography creates a natural cold trap that preserves acidity in the grapes by collecting cool night air. The winery manages approximately 2,000 hectares of plantings across the Tulbagh and Swartland regions, allowing winemakers to work with diverse soil types ranging from sandy valley floors to stony mountain slopes. Production focuses on fruity, accessible blends and varietal wines that utilize these varying microclimates.

Groot Tulbagh serves as a primary label for the winery, featuring varietals such as Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, and Pinotage. The range is designed for immediate consumption and food pairing, emphasizing regional fruit character over heavy oak influence. The producer has achieved several industry milestones, including being the first export cellar in the district and one of the first to produce sparkling wine in South Africa. Recent accolades include gold medals at the Vitis Vinifera Awards for its Cabernet Sauvignon.
