Colin Glaetzer founded Glaetzer Wines in 1995 to produce small quantities of premium red wine under a family label. The Glaetzer family has lived in the Barossa Valley since 1888, when ancestors migrated to South Australia from Brandenburg. Before establishing the winery, Colin spent thirty years in the industry and was instrumental in developing other significant Barossa labels. His son, Ben Glaetzer, began working at the winery in 1998 after studying oenology at the University of Adelaide. Ben assumed primary responsibility for winemaking and company leadership in the early 2000s, while continuing the family tradition of focusing on the northern Barossa.
The winery sources its fruit exclusively from the Ebenezer sub-region in the northern Barossa Valley. This district is characterized by a warm climate, low rainfall, and soils of sandy clay loam over a solid limestone base. The primary vineyard sources consist of ancient vines grown without irrigation, many of which are bush vines that have not been grafted and are aged between 80 and 110 years. These vines produce small yields because of deep root structures that allow them to adapt to climatic extremes. In the cellar, Ben Glaetzer uses neutral yeasts to preserve fruit purity and employs extended maceration on skins to develop tannin structure. The wines are typically aged for 12 to 18 months in a mix of French and American oak hogshead barrels.
The flagship of the range is the Amon-Ra Shiraz, which is produced from some of the oldest vines in the Ebenezer district. Other key wines include Anaperenna, a blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bishop, which is a varietal Shiraz. The Wallace bottling combines Shiraz and Grenache, taking its name from the maiden name of Colin’s wife, Judith. The producer has earned a reputation for creating wines that reflect the intense color and flavor profiles of the northern Barossa while maintaining a focused structure. The estate does not operate a public cellar door, focusing instead on limited production for global distribution.
