Weingut Willi Haag is a family owned estate situated in the village of Brauneberg within the Mosel region of Germany. The Haag family has a recorded history of viticulture in the area dating back to the 15th century, and the family residence is recognized as one of the oldest half timbered houses in the village. Marcus Haag currently manages the estate and leads the winemaking team. He assumed responsibility for the cellar in 1995 and took over full management in 1997 following the tenure of his father, Dieter Haag. The winery carries the name of Marcus's grandfather, Willi Haag, who established the estate as an independent entity after the original family holdings were divided between him and his brother Wilhelm in the 1960s.
The estate encompasses approximately 6.5 hectares of vineyards, which are planted exclusively with Riesling vines. These holdings are primarily located on the steep slopes of the Brauneberger Juffer and the Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr, where gradients can reach 70 percent. The terroir consists of weathered Devonian slate that provides essential drainage and retains solar heat to regulate vine temperatures in the cool climate. Winemaking takes place in a deep cellar partially carved into the natural rock, ensuring stable temperatures throughout the year. Marcus Haag employs a traditional approach that utilizes stainless steel tanks and large, neutral oak barrels known as Fuder. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure fruit quality and to navigate the difficult terrain of the steep slopes.
The winery is a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), an association that maintains high standards for German wine estates. Its production is focused on Riesling across a variety of Prädikat levels, including Kabinett and Spätlese as well as sweet Auslese styles. Approximately half of the output is destined for international markets, which contributes to a focus on naturally sweet wines that emphasize the aromatic fruit profile of the Mosel. The wines are noted for their mineral character and clarity along with distinct citrus fruit notes. Weingut Willi Haag maintains a reputation for producing precise wines that demonstrate significant potential for aging in the bottle and provide a consistent expression of the Brauneberg terroir.
