Dominique Piron

The Piron family history in the Beaujolais region began in 1590, with Dominique Piron representing the fourteenth generation of winegrowers in his lineage. Dominique Piron took over the family estate in 1971 and later established Maison Piron in 1988 as a combined merchant and grower operation, which was a relatively new model for the region at that time. In 2013, he partnered with Julien Revillon, a native of the region who brought additional vineyard holdings and eventually assumed full ownership and management of the company. While Dominique Piron recently launched a separate family project called Domaine du Vieux Bourg to focus on a smaller selection of vines, the original Maison Piron continues to operate as a major producer under Revillon's direction.

The estate manages approximately 95 hectares of vineyards, with a primary concentration in the Morgon appellation. The most prominent site is the Côte du Py, a hill characterized by 400 million year old blue schist and volcanic rock that provides a distinct mineral structure to the wines. Other holdings include parcels in Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Brouilly, and Beaujolais-Villages, alongside limited production of white wine from Chardonnay. Winemaking practices emphasize sustainable viticulture and traditional cellar methods. The grapes are typically hand-picked and vinified using a mix of whole cluster and destemmed fruit, with maceration times ranging from one to three weeks. Aging occurs in a combination of stainless steel, concrete tanks, and used oak barrels to preserve fruit purity and the expression of individual vineyard sites.

Dominique Piron is best recognized for the Morgon Côte du Py, a wine noted for its intensity and capacity for aging. The producer maintains a reputation for consistency across a large portfolio that highlights the geological diversity of the northern crus. Beyond his work at the estate, Dominique Piron held significant regional influence as the president of Inter Beaujolais from 2016 to 2021, where he worked to improve the international reputation of the area's wines. The house is regarded as a reliable source for Gamay that balances the traditional fruit-forward nature of the region with the more serious, structured character found in the ancient granitic and schist soils of Morgon.
