Domaine Pierre Morey

The Morey family viticultural lineage in Meursault dates to 1793, when Alexis Morey moved to the village from Chassagne-Montrachet. The current Domaine Pierre Morey was formally established in 1971 by Pierre Morey, who began by working alongside his father, Auguste. For decades, the family managed a significant portion of their production through sharecropping agreements with Domaine des Comtes Lafon, which gave them access to parcels in some of the most respected premier crus in Meursault. When the Lafon family ended these contracts in the 1980s, Pierre founded the négociant label Maison Morey-Blanc in 1992, naming it after his wife’s maiden name to maintain a diverse range of offerings. Pierre’s career was further defined by a twenty year tenure as the technical director at Domaine Leflaive, where he oversaw winemaking and vineyard management until 2008.

The domaine currently manages approximately 11 hectares of vineyards located in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, and Monthelie. Viticulture shifted significantly in the 1990s as Pierre sought to eliminate chemical treatments, leading to organic certification in 1992 and full biodynamic certification under Biodyvin in 1997. Winemaking for the white wines focuses on precision and patience, featuring manual harvesting and slow fermentations using only indigenous yeasts. The wines typically rest on their lees for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels with occasional stirring during the first winter. For the red wines, grapes are fully destemmed and fermented in open oak vats with gentle extraction to produce a style that emphasizes fruit purity and structural balance.

The reputation of the estate is built primarily on its white wines, which are known for their high acidity, stony minerality, and clear expression of terroir. The Meursault premier cru Les Perrières and the village lieu-dit Les Tessons are considered flagship bottlings, often demonstrating a lean and precise character similar to the style Pierre developed during his time at Leflaive. The domaine also produces a Bâtard-Montrachet grand cru from a small holding that yields powerful wines designed for long term aging. Recent additions to the portfolio include the Meursault Clos le Meix Tavaux, first produced in 2019. Now managed by Pierre’s daughter, Anne Morey, the domaine is recognized as a principal example of biodynamic viticulture in the Côte de Beaune.
