Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

The estate was acquired in 1804 by Jean-Baptiste Eugène Jobard du Mesnil, a Baron of the Empire. It passed to his nephew, Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, in 1888, who began managing the property in 1906 after replanting vines following the phylloxera crisis. Sem d'Angerville became a central figure in Burgundy for his opposition to the fraudulent blending practices of negociants in the early 20th century. In response, he became one of the first producers in the region to bottle his own production at the domaine rather than selling it in bulk. Jacques d'Angerville succeeded his father in 1952 and managed the estate for five decades. Today, the property is led by his son, Guillaume d'Angerville, and his daughter, Margaux, who joined the family business in 2024.

The domaine consists of approximately 14 hectares of vineyards, primarily located within the premier cru climats of Volnay. Under the direction of Guillaume d'Angerville and manager François Duvivier, the estate transitioned to biodynamic viticulture in 2006 and received full certification in 2009. The vineyards are planted with a specific clone known as Pinot d'Angerville, which produces small grapes and high flavor concentration. Winemaking follows a minimalist approach intended to prioritize site expression. This involves total destemming of the fruit and a cold soak before fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. Extraction is achieved through pumping over rather than punching down to manage tannin quality. The wines are aged for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak limited to 25 percent.

The estate is known for its collection of premier cru holdings, including Champans, Taillepieds, and Caillerets. Its most notable vineyard is the Clos des Ducs, a 2.15 hectare monopole that has been linked to the Dukes of Burgundy since the 16th century. The Volnay Premier Cru Les Fremiets parcel is situated on the border of Pommard, where the shallow, stony soils produce wines often noted for their structure and aromatic precision. The domaine is regarded as a reference point for the Volnay appellation, recognized for maintaining a style that emphasizes transparency and balance. Beyond Burgundy, the family also established Domaine du Pélican in the Jura region in 2012.
