Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils is a family owned wine estate based in Morey-Saint-Denis within the Côte de Nuits. The property was significantly developed by Georges Lignier during the 1970s and 1980s. Management eventually passed to his nephew, Benoît Stehly, who joined the domaine in 2002 and assumed full control of winemaking and vineyard operations in 2008. Stehly represents the fourth generation of the family at the estate, maintaining a separate operation from his relatives at the neighboring Domaine Hubert Lignier.
The estate manages approximately 16 hectares of vines divided into 50 parcels across 17 appellations. These holdings include vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny, Marsannay, and Gevrey-Chambertin, though the majority are located in Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyards are characterized by a high average vine age of over 50 years, primarily planted on limestone and clay soils. Stehly employs sustainable viticulture practices, such as maintaining permanent grass cover between rows to manage soil humidity and encourage deep root growth. Winemaking involves manual harvesting followed by a 70 to 90 percent de-stemming of the fruit. The wines undergo a cold pre-fermentation soak before aging in French oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with the proportion of new oak reaching 50 percent for Grand Cru wines.
The domaine is particularly recognized for its holdings in top tier sites, including being the largest proprietor of the Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru at approximately 1.49 hectares. Other signature wines include Clos de la Roche Grand Cru and Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, as well as Premier Cru bottlings from Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin. The style focuses on aromatic concentration and elegance rather than high extraction or intense color. While production is predominantly Pinot Noir, the estate also produces Aligoté and white wine from Morey-Saint-Denis, offering classic Burgundy character that is often accessible in its youth.
