Domaine Desaunay-Bissey

Domaine Desaunay-Bissey is a family-owned wine producer based in Flagey-Echezeaux, Burgundy. The estate took its current form in the 1970s when Bruno Desaunay began cultivating the vineyards belonging to his father-in-law, Daniel Bissey. The first vintage under the domaine label was released in 1975. For several decades, Bruno managed the operations, occasionally selling a portion of the production to notable négociants before transitioning to estate bottling for all of his wine. After Bruno's death in April 2023, his son Richard Desaunay assumed leadership of the winemaking and vineyard management. He continues to operate the domaine alongside his mother, Marie-Christine Bissey, preserving the family legacy and independent status.

The domaine comprises approximately six hectares of vineyards spread across the Cote de Nuits, including parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Vosne-Romanee. A defining feature of these holdings is the significant age of the vines, many of which range from 60 to over 100 years old. Notable parcels in the Echezeaux Grand Cru were planted as early as 1902. The family practices sustainable viticulture, having discontinued the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides in 2007 in favor of mechanical soil cultivation. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a short pre-fermentation cold soak followed by fermentation with native yeasts. The wines age in French oak for 14 to 18 months, typically using about 33 percent new oak, and have been bottled without fining or filtration since 1990.

Signature wines from the producer include the Grands-Echezeaux and Echezeaux Grand Crus, both of which are labeled as Vieilles Vignes due to the age of the vines. The estate also produces highly regarded premier crus such as Chambolle-Musigny Les Combes d'Orveau and Vosne-Romanee Les Rouges. While the domaine functioned for years as a quiet source of high-quality fruit for other labels, it has recently earned a reputation for its artisanal approach and concentrated, terroir-driven style. Critics frequently note the depth and structural balance of the wines, which benefit from the naturally low yields provided by the ancient rootstocks. These wines are recognized for their aging potential and their precise expression of the distinct clay and limestone soils of the region.
