Le Clos des Cazaux is a family-owned estate with deep roots in the village of Vacqueyras, where the Vache and Archimbaud families have been recorded since the 17th century. The modern iteration of the domaine was established in 1905 by Gabriel Archimbaud, who was a central figure in the early development of the local wine industry. Archimbaud was among the first producers in the region to sell wine by the bottle under the estate and village name rather than selling in bulk to négociants. The management of the property passed to the Vache family through marriage, and today the fifth generation, represented by brothers Jean-Michel and Frédéric Vache, oversees the operations. Jean-Michel returned to the estate in 1990, followed by Frédéric, a trained oenologist, in 1998.
The estate encompasses 48 hectares of vineyards split primarily between the Vacqueyras and Gigondas appellations. In Vacqueyras, the vines grow on 24 hectares of slopes characterized by Aptian sandstone and clay, a specific terroir that accounts for only a small portion of the appellation. The 20 hectares in Gigondas are located at higher altitudes, reaching up to 450 meters on the south-facing slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail. These vineyards feature heavy limestone soils mixed with clay and sand. Winemaking follows traditional principles, utilizing concrete and stainless steel tanks for fermentation and aging. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted carefully, and moved via gravity to preserve fruit integrity. Minimal intervention is practiced in the cellar to highlight the geological differences between the various parcels.
The producer is recognized for its robust and structural red wines, particularly the Gigondas La Tour Sarrazine and the Vacqueyras Cuvée des Templiers. The La Tour Sarrazine takes its name from the ruins of an 8th-century Moorish watchtower located on the family property in Gigondas. While the estate is heavily focused on red blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, it also maintains a strong focus on white wines. The Cuvée des Clefs d'Or is a signature white blend featuring old-vine Clairette, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. The domaine maintains a reputation for producing age-worthy wines that balance Southern Rhône concentration with the natural freshness provided by high-altitude vineyard sites and limestone-rich soils.
