Domaine Borie de Maurel

Michel Escande established Domaine Borie de Maurel in 1989. Before becoming a winemaker, Escande worked as a professional sailor, but he chose to return to his family's agricultural roots in the village of Félines-Minervois. He began with five hectares of inherited family vines and a small cellar, gradually expanding the estate to its current size of 35 hectares. The property is managed as a family affair, with Michel working alongside his sons Gabriel and Maxime. Michel Escande has earned the nickname the wizard of Félines because of his influence in elevating the winemaking standards of the region and his deep understanding of the local landscape.

The vineyards are situated on the slopes of the Petit Causse at the foot of the Montagne Noire at elevations ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The terroir is divided into two distinct zones. The lower, warm lands feature limestone clays and silts where Mourvèdre and Grenache flourish, while the highlands contain marl and limestone deposits from ancient erosion that provide the freshness needed for Syrah. The estate is certified organic and adheres to biodynamic practices, emphasizing soil health and manual labor in the fields. In the winery, the process involves hand-harvesting grapes at peak ripeness and using indigenous yeasts for fermentation. The wines undergo long maceration periods and are aged in various vessels, including stainless steel and oak, to preserve the freshness and mineral character of the diverse soils.

Domaine Borie de Maurel is particularly recognized for its red wines based on Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. The flagship Cuvée Sylla is produced from old Syrah vines and is noted for its concentration and longevity, often cited for its ability to age for over a decade. Other significant labels include La Féline, a blend that highlights the elegance of the Félines-Minervois area, and the supple Esprit d'Automne. The estate played a major role in the recognition of Minervois-La Livinière as the first cru appellation in the Languedoc in 1999. Today, it remains a benchmark for the region, producing wines that reflect the intensity of the Mediterranean climate while maintaining a focus on structural balance and aromatic precision.
