Domaine Antoine Sanzay

Antoine Sanzay is the sixth generation of his family to work the vineyards of Varrains. The estate historically functioned as a grape supplier for the local cooperative until Antoine returned to the property in 1999 after completing his viticultural studies. During his formative years, he gained experience at Clos Rougeard and received guidance from influential local figures such as Nady Foucault and Thierry Germain. He began the transition to independent production by bottling a small fraction of the harvest under his own label in 2002. Over the following decade, he gradually withdrew his vineyard parcels from cooperative contracts, achieving the goal of bottling his entire estate production with the 2014 vintage.

The domaine manages approximately 11 hectares of vines, primarily Cabernet Franc with a small amount of Chenin Blanc. The vineyard holdings are situated on the characteristic tuffeau limestone and clay soils of Saumur-Champigny, notably including four hectares within the highly regarded Les Poyeux lieu-dit. Sanzay adopted organic farming practices in 2009 and received official certification in 2014. His cellar work involves native yeast fermentations in concrete tanks and a focus on infusion rather than heavy extraction. Aging takes place in a combination of concrete, foudres, and older barrels to avoid the aromatic influence of new oak. This approach aims to preserve the transparency of the terroir and the delicate fruit character of the grapes.

Sanzay has earned a reputation as one of the most respected producers in the central Loire Valley, often mentioned alongside neighbors like Clos Rougeard and Domaine des Roches Neuves. His flagship wine is the single vineyard Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux, which is valued for its balance and structural longevity. Other notable wines include the La Paterne and Les Terres Rouges reds, as well as the Les Salles Martin Saumur Blanc. Due to limited yields and a dedicated following among wine professionals, his bottles are strictly allocated and sought after in the international market.
