Diego Morra

The Morra family has been involved in viticulture and hazelnut cultivation in the Langhe region for three generations. Domenico Morra established the initial agricultural holdings in the mid twentieth century, located in the municipality of Verduno. For many years, the family operated as grape growers, selling their fruit to other prominent producers in the Barolo zone. This changed in 2006 when Diego Morra, after completing his education in viticulture and oenology, decided to vinify and bottle the estate production under his own name. He constructed a modern cellar at the family headquarters, Cascina Mosca, which is situated on the hills between Alba and Verduno. Today, Diego manages the winery alongside his wife, Francesca Garbaccio, maintaining the family connection to the land.

The estate encompasses 30 hectares of vineyards located across the communes of Verduno, La Morra, and Roddi. These holdings are complemented by 20 hectares of hazelnut groves, which are a traditional crop of the Piedmont region. A significant portion of their land is dedicated to the Monvigliero cru, where they hold four hectares, making them the primary landowners in this prestigious vineyard. The soils in these plots consist mainly of limestone and clay, contributing to the distinct floral and spicy profile of the resulting wines. Farming is conducted using integrated control methods that prioritize biodiversity and soil health. In the cellar, the winemaking process focuses on preserving varietal character through long maceration times and the use of large oak barrels, cement tanks, and stainless steel.

Diego Morra is particularly noted for his work with the rare Verduno Pelaverga grape. His father and grandfather were instrumental in the 1970s in saving this indigenous variety from disappearing, and Diego currently serves as the president of the Verduno e Uno association to protect it. The flagship wines are the Barolo Monvigliero and Barolo San Lorenzo, which are recognized for their elegance and structural balance. The portfolio also includes Barolo del Comune di Verduno, Langhe Nebbiolo, and Barbera d'Alba. The estate has gained a reputation for producing wines that reflect the specific microclimates of their crus, earning consistent recognition for their purity and aromatic finesse.
