Dalrymple Vineyards

Dalrymple Vineyards was established in 1987 by the Mitchell and Sundstrup families, who planted the first vines on the sloping hills of Pipers River in northeast Tasmania. In late 2007, the estate and its brand were acquired by the Hill-Smith family, the owners of Hill-Smith Family Estates and the Yalumba winery. Peter Caldwell, a Tasmanian native, was appointed as the vigneron and head winemaker in 2010. Caldwell previously spent nearly two decades working in Burgundy, Bordeaux, California, and New Zealand, and he now oversees both the viticulture and the winemaking processes for the estate.

The primary estate vineyard is located in the Pipers River region, roughly five kilometers from the Bass Strait. This maritime proximity provides a cool climate where temperatures rarely exceed 25 degrees Celsius, allowing for a long ripening period that preserves natural acidity. The soils here are predominantly ancient basalt and clay loams, which influence the aromatic profile of the grapes. Beyond the home site, Dalrymple manages several other specific Tasmanian vineyards, including locations in the Coal River Valley, Ouse, and Swansea. Winemaking techniques include the use of small open-top fermenters, wild yeast fermentation, and varying levels of whole-bunch inclusion to build structure and texture. Most wines are matured in French oak barriques for approximately ten months before release.

The producer is best known for its focused portfolio of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are crafted as either regional blends or single-site expressions. The Pipers River Pinot Noir and Chardonnay serve as the flagship estate wines, but more limited releases like the Cottage Block and Cave Block highlight specific parcels of fruit. Dalrymple has developed a reputation for producing wines with a sense of place, characterized by tension, savory complexity, and fine tannins. The estate is frequently cited as a benchmark for Tasmanian cool-climate viticulture, and its single-site labels regularly receive high scores in national wine shows and international publications such as Decanter and the Halliday Wine Companion.
