Producer
Rich Salvestrin, a third generation Napa Valley winemaker and the proprietor of Salvestrin Winery, established Cult Wine Co. as a distinct label intended to make quality California wine more approachable. The Salvestrin family history in St. Helena dates back to 1932 when Italian immigrants John and Emma Salvestrin purchased a portion of the historic Crane Ranch. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the family began selling grapes and eventually transitioned into dedicated winemaking under their own name. Rich Salvestrin, who holds a degree in viticulture from Fresno State, launched this specific brand around 2008 to complement the family estate premium offerings. The company remains under the direct ownership and management of the Salvestrin family and utilizes their winemaking infrastructure in the St. Helena appellation.
Though the founding family is based in the heart of Napa Valley, Cult Wine Co. primarily sources its grapes from the Lodi AVA and other carefully selected California vineyards to ensure a consistent price point. This sourcing strategy takes advantage of the Mediterranean climate found east of the San Francisco Bay, where warm days are balanced by cooling evening winds that travel through the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta. The winemaking process reflects traditional California techniques including controlled fermentation and extended barrel aging. For example, the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon typically spends fifteen months in French oak barrels, with roughly twenty five percent of the wood being new, to achieve a balance between ripe fruit notes and structural complexity.
The producer is most recognized for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, which are marketed with an emphasis on value and communal enjoyment. The brand name playfully acknowledges the prestigious and expensive cult wine category of Napa Valley while positioning these bottles as an accessible alternative for frequent consumption. Notable releases include special anniversary bottlings and various vintage dated offerings that highlight the fruit forward characteristics typical of the Lodi region. These wines frequently receive accolades from publications such as Wine Enthusiast, which has awarded the label 90 point scores and praised its ability to deliver well structured profiles at a competitive cost relative to other North Coast producers.
