Cisteller

Founded in 2022, Cisteller is a partnership between Sergi Canals and Jessica Madigan. The couple met while studying enology at the University of California, Davis, before spending several years working harvests across the global wine circuit in regions such as Burgundy, Napa Valley, and Australia. The name Cisteller, which means basket weaver in Catalan, serves as a tribute to the great-grandfather of Canals, Josep, who was a professional weaver in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia during the early 20th century. While the family has a long history of growing grapes and producing sparkling wine through previous ventures, this project marks the first time the family has bottled estate wines under this specific identity.

The winery is based at Finca El Sot, a 20 hectare family estate located in Subirats within the Ordal mountains. Approximately 12 hectares are currently under vine at elevations ranging from 250 to 450 meters. The terroir is characterized by fossil-rich limestone and white clay soils that are notably calcareous, contributing to high natural acidity and low pH levels in the fruit. Viticulture is strictly organic, and winemaking involves minimal intervention. Fermentation and aging take place in a diverse array of vessels, including stainless steel tanks, concrete amphorae, and 300 liter French or Hungarian oak barrels, often with extended time on fine lees.

Cisteller joined Corpinnat in 2024 as the thirteenth member of the collective brand for high quality sparkling wines in the Penedès region. Their sparkling portfolio includes Lucidity, a traditional method blend of Xarel·lo and Macabeu, and Courtship, a blanc de noirs made from Garnatxa Negra. The producer also receives attention for its range of still wines, such as Cisteller Verbena, which is made from the rare Incrocio Manzoni variety, and Cisteller Gris, produced from Xarel·lo Vermell. These wines are valued for their saline character and precision, positioning the estate as a modern representative of terroir-focused Catalan winemaking.
