Château Le Grand Verdus

Château Le Grand Verdus is a family owned estate located in the commune of Sadirac. The property features a Renaissance style manor house built in 1579 on the foundations of an earlier fortress. The modern history of the winery began in 1846 when Claude Deschamps, an architect known for designing the stone bridges of Bordeaux and Libourne, acquired the property. It eventually passed to the Le Grix de la Salle family, who continue to own and manage the estate. Philippe Le Grix de la Salle became the family's first dedicated winemaker after World War II, planting vines in 1947. In 1973, he withdrew from the local cooperative to produce and bottle wine independently under the estate label. Management currently rests with Antoine Le Grix de la Salle and his sons, Thomas and Edouard.

The vineyard covers approximately 115 hectares of land characterized by a hilly topography. Elevations vary by more than 80 meters, which is an unusual degree of relief for the Bordeaux region. The terroir consists of a mosaic of soils including clay limestone on lower slopes, gravelly clay on the ridges, and silty clay in the valleys and plateaus. Viticultural practices moved toward environmental sustainability under the current generation, achieving full organic certification in 2023. The family maintains about 50 distinct plots to manage the diversity of the site. Winemaking involves a combination of traditional and modern equipment, including temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, clay amphorae, and Burgundian oak barrels.

Although located within the Entre-Deux-Mers geographic area, the estate is primarily recognized for red wines produced under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. These reds typically blend Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The white wine production focuses on Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, which are often vinified as single varietal or parcel selected cuvées. Recent innovations include the Les Divergentes and Les Originales series, which explore non-traditional techniques or grape varieties such as Syrah. The estate maintains an autonomous distribution model, choosing to market its wines directly to international consumers and merchants rather than through the traditional Bordeaux merchant system.
