Château Suduiraut

The estate took the name Suduiraut in 1580 following the marriage of Nicole d'Allard and Léonard de Suduiraut. During the Fronde insurrection in the mid 17th century, the original manor house was burned down, leading to the construction of the current château. The property features formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, the gardener to King Louis XIV. It was designated a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. After passing through several families and facing a period of declining quality in the mid 20th century, the estate was purchased in 1992 by AXA Millésimes. This insurance group also owns other notable properties such as Château Pichon Baron and Château Petit Village.

The vineyard covers 91 hectares in the commune of Preignac, where the soil consists primarily of sandy gravel and clay. This terroir is located near Château d'Yquem and provides the specific conditions necessary for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. The plantings are dominated by Sémillon, which makes up about 90 percent of the vineyard, supplemented by Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Sauvignon Gris. Winemaking involves a labor intensive process of successive pickings, known as tries, where workers harvest only the grapes perfectly affected by noble rot. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled tanks and barrels, followed by 18 to 24 months of aging in French oak barrels, approximately 50 percent of which are new.

Château Suduiraut is best known for its grand vin, a sweet Sauternes characterized by its concentration and ability to age for many decades. The estate also produces second and third sweet wines, formerly labeled as Castelnau de Suduiraut and now often identified under the Lions de Suduiraut label. In recent years, the management has expanded production to include dry white wines under the Bordeaux Blanc appellation. These dry expressions include the Vieilles Vignes and S de Suduiraut, which use the same terroir to produce fresh and mineral styles. The estate maintains a reputation for producing some of the most powerful and opulent wines in the Sauternes appellation.
