Château Rieussec
Château Rieussec originated in the 18th century under the ownership of the Carmelite monks of Langon. Following the French Revolution, the estate was confiscated by the state and sold at auction around 1790 to the Marheilhac family. It subsequently passed through several owners, including the Gasqueton family of Calon Ségur and Albert Vuillier. In 1984, the property was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), who partnered with Albert Frère. Today, the estate is managed by the Rothschild family, with Saskia de Rothschild leading recent modernization efforts and sustainability initiatives, including B Corp certification.
The vineyard covers 85 hectares on a high plateau in the commune of Fargues, bordering Château d'Yquem to the west. The terroir consists of sandy gravel and clay soils with limestone outcrops. Sémillon is the primary variety, making up roughly 80 percent of plantings, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Muscadelle. Viticulture centers on the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, facilitated by the humid microclimate near the Ciron and Garonne rivers. Harvesting is performed by hand in multiple successive passes through the vineyard to select only the most concentrated grapes. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, and the wine is typically aged for 16 to 26 months in oak, with a high proportion of new wood used for the grand vin.
Château Rieussec was ranked as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. It is recognized for producing some of the most powerful and rich dessert wines in the region. The estate produces its namesake grand vin as well as a second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, which is named in honor of the original monastic owners. Additionally, the property releases a dry white wine labeled R de Rieussec, made from a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. In 2021, the estate introduced a redesigned bottle and label for the grand vin, emphasizing its shift toward modern environmental standards and distinct market positioning.
