Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément is among the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux, with its first harvest recorded in 1252. The property was originally known as the Domaine de la Mothe before being gifted in 1299 to Bertrand de Goth, the Archbishop of Bordeaux. Upon his election as Pope Clement V in 1305, he retained the estate and implemented improvements to its viticulture. Ownership remained with the Archbishopric of Bordeaux for nearly five centuries until the French Revolution, when the state seized and sold the property. In the 20th century, the estate was revitalized by Paul Montagne, who purchased it in 1939 and worked to restore its status after a period of decline and storm damage. Since the 1980s, the property has been owned and managed by Bernard Magrez, who has expanded the international presence of the estate.

The vineyards are located in the Pessac Léognan appellation on the southern outskirts of Bordeaux, where the terroir consists of ancient alluvial deposits known as Pyrenean gravel. This gravelly topsoil sits over a subsoil of clay and limestone, providing the drainage and mineral complexity necessary for Graves wines. The estate maintains approximately 60 hectares of vines, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with smaller blocks of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. White varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle, and Sauvignon Gris, occupy about 10 hectares. Viticultural practices combine tradition and modern technology, including the use of animal traction with oxen and horses alongside solar powered drones for vineyard monitoring. Winemaking involves manual harvesting, whole berry fermentation in large wooden vats, and aging in French oak barrels.

The estate holds the status of Grand Cru Classé for red wine under the 1959 Classification of Graves. It is noted for being one of the few properties in the region that produces both a highly regarded red and a dry white wine under the primary chateau label. The flagship red wine is characterized by its concentration and potential for long term aging, while the white wine, Château Pape Clément Blanc, is produced in limited quantities and is considered one of the leading dry whites of the appellation. In addition to the grand vin, the estate produces a second wine named Le Clémentin du Pape Clément in both red and white versions. The property remains a central piece of the Bernard Magrez portfolio and is frequently cited for its consistency across vintages.
