Château Marsau

Château Marsau is a family-owned estate located at the eastern edge of the Bordeaux region. The modern history of the property began in 1994 when it was purchased by Jean-Marie Chadronnier, the former CEO of the major Bordeaux négociant house CVBG. In 2017, his son Mathieu Chadronnier and daughter-in-law Anne-Laurence Chadronnier purchased the estate from him to manage it as an independent family project. Anne-Laurence, who is originally from Brittany, has been the head winemaker at the property since 2012.

The vineyard covers approximately 13 to 14 hectares situated on a high plateau with deep blue clay soils, a geological profile often compared to the famous terroirs of Pomerol. The estate is planted almost exclusively to Merlot, which the owners believe best expresses the nuances of this specific site. Under the current management, the property shifted to organic viticulture and achieved full certification in 2021. Winemaking techniques prioritize soft extraction and precision, utilizing a combination of stainless steel tanks for fermentation and a mix of foudres, French oak barrels, and clay amphorae for aging.

Château Marsau is widely recognized for offering high quality at an accessible price point within the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The estate gained significant international attention when critic Robert Parker described it as the Petrus of the Côtes de Francs, noting its sumptuous and fleshy character. In addition to the grand vin, the estate produces a second wine named Prélude de Marsau and a distinct label called Prairie, which originates from a specific plot that was separated to showcase a different stylistic expression of the plateau.
