Château Léoville Barton

FranceSaint-Julien, Bordeaux, France

Château Léoville Barton was established in 1826 when Hugh Barton, an Irishman who already owned the neighboring Château Langoa Barton, purchased a portion of the larger Léoville estate. The family roots in the Bordeaux wine trade date back further to 1722, when Thomas Barton first settled in the region as a merchant. The property has remained in the same family for over two centuries, representing the longest continuous family ownership of any estate in the 1855 Classification. Following the death of Anthony Barton in 2022, the estate is managed by his daughter, Lilian Barton Sartorius, along with her children, Mélanie and Damien.

The vineyard covers 50 hectares in the Saint Julien appellation, featuring a terroir of deep gravel over a subsoil of clay. The plantings consist primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than 70 percent of the vineyard, alongside Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. A unique aspect of the estate is that it possesses no physical château building of its own. All winemaking takes place at the sister property, Château Langoa Barton, where the fruit is fermented in large, temperature controlled wooden vats. The wine is typically aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 60 percent being new wood.

Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate is widely recognized for producing wines that emphasize balance and structural longevity. While many neighboring properties have adopted modern high extraction techniques, the Barton family maintains a style focused on freshness and what they term drinkability. The grand vin is often noted for its resemblance to the powerful wines of Pauillac while retaining the finesse typical of Saint Julien. In addition to the primary label, the estate produces a second wine named La Réserve de Léoville Barton, which is typically sourced from younger vines or specific parcels that do not meet the criteria for the first wine.
