Château La Garde

Château La Garde is a wine estate in the Martillac commune of the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux. Its history as a vineyard is documented to the 18th century, appearing on the 1756 Cassini map of France. The property includes a chartreuse country house built in 1732. During the 19th century, it was owned by the Blanchard family and later the Lacoste family, who were also owners of Grand-Puy-Lacoste in Pauillac. The Lacoste family expanded the vineyards after the phylloxera epidemic. The merchant Louis Eschenauer acquired the estate in 1920. In June 1990, the Bordeaux wine firm Dourthe purchased the property and began a comprehensive program to improve wine quality through vineyard restructuring and facility modernization.

The vineyard covers 52 hectares on a high gravel plateau. A detailed study conducted after the 1990 purchase identified 27 distinct soil variations across the estate, including deep gravel, clay-limestone, and sandy-clay deposits. Red grape varieties occupy the majority of the land, primarily Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. White varieties, mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, are grown on cooler plots with limestone and clay subsoils. The estate completed a full renovation of its cellars in 2021. The new facility uses truncated and inverted stainless steel tanks to allow for precise vinification of individual vineyard parcels. This approach is managed by technical director Frédéric Bonnaffous to ensure that each plot is fermented and aged according to its specific soil characteristics.

The primary production consists of a red and a dry white wine under the Château La Garde label. The red wine is known for its concentration, tannic structure, and aging potential, reflecting the gravelly soils of the Martillac region. The white wine is produced using traditional Bordeaux methods, including fermentation and aging on the lees to develop texture and aromatic complexity. A second wine called Terres de La Garde is also produced. The estate maintains certifications for High Environmental Value and Terra Vitis, indicating a focus on sustainable viticulture and biodiversity within the vineyard. While not a classified growth from the 1855 or 1953 lists, the property is recognized for producing wines that consistently meet the standards of the Pessac-Léognan elite.
