Château Gloria
Henri Martin founded Château Gloria in the late 1930s. Born into a family of coopers and cellar masters at neighboring estates, Martin purchased his first hectare of vines in 1939. He served as the mayor of Saint-Julien Beychevelle for many years and held the presidency of the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux. He expanded the estate over several decades by acquiring specific parcels from various 1855 classified growths, including properties such as Beychevelle, Gruaud-Larose, and Léoville-Poyferré. Today, the estate remains under family ownership through Domaines Henri Martin, managed by Jean-Louis Triaud along with his children Vanessa and Jean Triaud.
The vineyard covers 50 hectares across the Saint-Julien appellation, with additional small holdings in neighboring Pauillac that are included by special dispensation. The terroir consists of Günzian gravel over a subsoil of sand and clay. Plantings are composed of 65 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot, 5 percent Cabernet Franc, and 5 percent Petit Verdot. In 2024, the estate achieved full organic certification. Winemaking is overseen by technical director Rémi Di Constanzo and involves manual harvesting followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The wine ages for 14 months in oak barrels, 40 percent of which are new each year.
The estate is primarily recognized for its grand vin, Château Gloria. It also produces second wines under the labels Esprit de Gloria and Château Peymartin. Although the estate was not included in the original 1855 classification because it was established much later, it maintains a reputation for quality comparable to its classified neighbors. The wine is often noted for being more accessible in price than the classified growths while retaining the structural characteristics of Saint-Julien. The style is typically characterized by flavors of black fruit, cedar, and tobacco.
